On May 25^th, 2012 the “Luvolution” will begin promptly at 8pm with indie artist Monica Blaire and radio personality, Suga Rae as hosts and special guest Ideeyah for the evening of music, art and passion. Be prepared to take in the poignant sounds of Muhsinah, a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, composer and arranger- or you can refer to her as “The Golden Girl”.

A classically trained pianist since the tender age of eleven and alumnus of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Howard University respectively, Muhsinah definitely is not a stranger to showmanship and skill. She has also recorded with Common (Universal Mind Control, 2008), and joined the hip hop artist’s band for his Universal Mind Control Tour with N*E*R*D, performing on television shows and even President Obama’s Inaugural Ball in 2009. Since then, Muhsinah has released solo material (‘Oscillations: Sine’ EP 2008 & ‘Oscillations: Triangle’ EP 2010) and decided to start touring on her own to promote her latest single ‘Gone’ and the forthcoming full-length project scheduled to release this summer.

The wonderfully talented Ideeyah is a tenacious independent artist with original material and flare sure to grab the attention of the audience. There will also be an interactive display of fine arts and independent vendors who represent the finest in hand and heart-crafted goods the city has to offer. Monica Blaire is a righteous fit for hosting thanks to her truthful artistry as a singer & songwriter herself, and her ability to create an interactive experience will enrapture concert attendees. Suga Rae will not only bring her years of experience as a radio professional to the table but will be reintroducing herself back to the Detroit market since returning from Dallas, TX.

The Eastern Market via Winder St

Every other Saturday, the day after payday Friday, I like to go on my shopping excursions in the city and the metro area. I have an affinity for independent business owners, especially those who are unique and hand-craft their designs or make things organically with care. After breakfast at Farmer’s Restaurant and my usual shopping trip at The Eastern Market (you will catch me there almost every Saturday), on my way home Mix 92.3 was airing live from The 8 Mile Trade Center. I never heard of it and since I wasn’t far I decided to swing by and check it out. It reminded me of the Russell Industrial Center aka Russell’s Bazaar right off 75 and Clay Avenue.

The grid-like shopping center had small compartments of shops for every trade. I happened to take a liking to The Morning Glory shop and purchased a bottle of Baby Powder lotion for my purse and baby…this stuff is delightful!

Once I got a feel for my new spot to get whipped goods for my skin it was time to head out once again. Since I was crossing Woodward, I decided to go north and visit my favorite earring designer of Shionne Designs, located in The Rust Belt Market, to pick up my Whitney Houston earrings (and to check on my Minnie Riperton earrings but she hasn’t made those yet *hint hint*).

The greatest surprise was a henna artist who I hadn’t had the pleasure of witnessing before at the Rust Belt Market. Since henna is a cool art and you can even have it customized, I decided to use the opportunity to “test drive” a tattoo on my wrist that I’ve been wanting to get for a while now. I figured the henna tattoo would help me with the decision on my location .

Minus the ending swirls and dots it’s the Swahili symbol for “Hakuna Matata” (No worries)!

 There is no way I can be on the main strip of 9 Mile near Woodward in downtown Ferndale and not explore some of my favorite shops for their latest selections. One in particular is the Designer Resale Boutique which has become a personal favorite. There is always something new and fabulous in that store and this time I lucked out big time with a steal! There was a dress in the window that caught me in the rapture of its glory, instantly and the helpful associate, Deborah, even took a photo of me in it because it was just that fabulous. She also commented on how many people came in to try it on and how much it would be missed! I refuse to post that photo, however, because it is my birthday dress! It shall be revealed on the seventeenth of August!

The host for the evening was Detroit’s own Monica Blaire and she did a lovely job bringing her natural energy to the crowd and helping everything flow smoothly. Ms. Blaire made sure everyone was having a wonderful time and even came up with unique ways to distribute giveaways like asking for the first person to bring up a men’s size ten shoe. The first person Monica Blaire introduced to the stage was Ms. Nissa and her powerhouse soprano vocals wowed supporters and newbies alike. Her stage presence was precise and she didn’t shy away from going to the next level emotionally with her own music- something that is missing with a lot of artists. You could feel her love for her craft through every note and riff she sang and every sway of her hips and fling of her hair! Ms. Nissa performed original material and gave us all something to look forward to in forthcoming shows.

Next up was the “Pioneer of Alternative Hip Hop” himself, RenCen CoolBeanz who came out with a hoodie on to show support for Trayvon Martin and even spoke a few words about the justice rally he attended in our city. After the much-needed serious moment of reflection it was time to get the party started- the CoolBeanz way! With a full band to back him up, RenCen also had his guitar and rocked out with his shirt, tie and glasses. The Cool Nerd performed songs from his recent album Inspiration: My Last Album such as “The Beer Song”, where he finally won chugging a beer against a female which he noted he always loses to. There was also a special guest performance from Que of local rock band Final Cue on songs “Breath” and “Pressure, Diamonds and Muthafuggaz”, and Stryfe performed “Epic” with him as well. Mr. CoolBeanz was very interactive and engaging with his audience and warmed up the crowd very well, along with his DJ-ing sidekick, DJ Equad.

The crowd was finally hyped up for the main attraction which was the powerhouse duo, J*DaVeY, made up of singer Jack Davey and producer/ keyboardist Brook D’Leau. I was a first-timer to their music as well as the majority of concert-goers that evening but trust me when I tell you I became an instant fan (just add music)! For starters, the vocals of Jack Davey are a perfect blend of Gwen Stefani and Eykah Badu. Their collective sound reminds me of Prince with a Neptunes edge and a good mixture of Electronic, Alternative Rock and Hip Hop influences of their own. The facial expressions in the room where very identical to my own as Jack Davey electrified us with her stage presence and sonic soul-stirring melodies. The duo performed songs from their mixtapes, Boudoir Synema and Evil Christian Cop, such as “Quicksand” and “Fight The Daylight”. There were also a host of songs performed from their latest album, New Designer Drug, as well as songs from a 2008 album The Beauty In Distortion/The Land of The Lost.

The Heart Healers put together a grand event for us to enjoy and we hope they bring us more and that J*DaVeY comes back soon!

The first time I heard Pato Margetic was at the Acoustiq Musique show at The Music Hall Jazz Cafe at the end of last year. Needless to say I was taken aback because I was unaware of his music and when I found out he is a Detroit native it was icing on the cake! His performance had everyone caught up in every stroke of his acoustic guitar as his eyes pierced the audience and his lyrics penetrated our souls! Pato has been releasing great music to the world since 2009 with his debut album Day By Day followed by the sophomore release of Detroit Soul in 2011. Pato is now on his third release and has released singles since the end of last year. His latest, “Fall Apart” has an accompanied video that we at Distinguished Detroit got a sneak preview of (because he thinks we’re cool). This case has caused a wavelength of anger across the nation because an unarmed African-American teenage boy was gunned down by George Zimmerman, a caucasian self-appointed neighborhood watchman who targeted him because he looked suspicious in a hoodie. As this case unfolds and Zimmerman’s friends are speaking out on his behalf of the account, while the media is going to work on tarnishing Martin’s character, both sides of the story will never be heard. So in response, various cities have organized “hoodie marches” for Trayvon Martin and Detroit came together not only for Martin but to address the issues we face at home with babies being gunned down in their homes and the recent abductions of children and women.

The Detroit Branch of The NAACP in conjunction with the UAW, Detroit 300, LA SED, Rainbow PUSH, The Detroit Police Department, United Communities of America, Detroit Council of Baptist Pastors, National Action Network and various faith-based organizations came together to organize the rally. Over a thousand people were present and it was a very peaceful rally that involved a lot of tears, prayers, speakers such as Rev. Wendell Anthony, Councilwoman JoAnn Watson, poetry by world-renowned poet Jessica Care Moore and many more whose heartfelt cries for justice in Detroit enriched the hearts standing before them.

My only plea is for us to keep the momentum going and seize the safety of our city. Our community has fallen apart, especially within the first quarter of this year with missing children and massive shootings in our streets. I was talking with a friend of mine yesterday about the mentality of our residents from the “no snitching” rule to the pointing of fingers about what others aren’t doing. Instead of discussing what needs to be done, let’s see some action and get involved in our youth and communities within our beautiful city. I believe in the comeback of Detroit and it can only get better once we get involved and support everything going on (from local businesses to community programs) within our city limits.

We have work to do, Detroit.
