A Note From The Editor-In-Chief
Too much of our city has been depicted in a negative light within the past five years in the media. Yes, Detroit has been through hard times but which major city hasn’t? What major city in our country hasn’t been hit by economical failures and doesn’t have rough parts in their town? The rich history and culture of our city is overshadowed by crime rates, corrupt city officials and auto industry failures, but that does not define the spirit of Detroit.
I happened to catch Ice Cube’s “Behind The Music” on VH1 and he explained the purpose behind penning the lyrics to “It Was A Good Day” on his 1992, The Predator album release. Everyone was used to his gangsta-laced lyrics, painting phonetic pictures of the hardcore Compton, L.A. streets he was raised in. Lyrics that the NAACP still detest ’til this day but will forever be known as “ghetto classics” by the urban masses. Ice Cube decided to remind his listeners that even ‘the hood’ has it’s good days and everyday doesn’t involve violence and rainy days void of sunlight.
Distinguished Detroit serves as the reader’s reminder that there are good days to look forward to. We are a proud city full of young, innovative hipsters- movers & shakers available to serve our fertile youth and rebuild our land. Our ancestral roots run deep and our elders willingly educate, preserve and pass on the torch of Detroit’s legacy. We shine bright in our “Detroit Sunrise” (word to Dwele) and I endeavor to make this site a lustrous reflection of the stars who grace our streets on a daily basis.
Peace, Love & Light,
LiLi Sheree
